How to decide whether Australia or New Zealand is your first ANZ market
Australia is roughly five times the GDP of New Zealand, but NZ is often faster, cheaper and more forgiving as a proving ground before an east-coast Australian launch.
Overview
Founders entering the ANZ region rarely need to choose one country and ignore the other. The real question is which to lead with — the larger, more competitive Australian market, or the smaller but more agile New Zealand market.
Australia: scale and specialisation
Around AUD 2.6 trillion GDP, 27 million people, concentrated in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. Enterprise buyers have deep budgets but slow procurement cycles. Regulation is tighter (ACCC, ASIC, TGA, APRA), and channel access is dominated by a small number of incumbents in most categories.
New Zealand: speed and access
Around NZD 400 billion GDP, 5.2 million people, most economic activity in Auckland and Wellington. NZ often has one dominant regulator per domain, shorter enterprise sales cycles, and easier access to C-suite decision-makers. Many international brands use NZ as a live beta before scaling into Australia.
Using CER and TTMR to bridge the two
The Closer Economic Relations (CER) agreement removes almost all tariffs and quotas between the two countries, and the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Arrangement (TTMR) means most product standards and many professional licences are recognised across the Tasman. That lets you validate in NZ and transplant most of the compliance work into Australia within months, not years.
How to choose
Lead with New Zealand if you need speed, want to test with lower burn, or your product needs iteration. Lead with Australia if you have the capital, your buyer set is concentrated in enterprise or government, or your unit economics only work at scale.
